The khukuri is not just a knife. It is Nepal’s most iconic blade, carried by Gurkha soldiers for centuries, forged by hand by a caste of blacksmiths called the Bishwakarmas, and passed down through generations as both tool and symbol of identity.
But when you searched for one online, you’d find the same problem everywhere: outdated websites that looked untrustworthy, no clear way to verify authenticity, and a buying experience that felt as rough as an unfinished blade.
The Problem
A client came to me with a genuine product — hand-forged khukuris made by skilled Nepali craftsmen — but no digital presence to match. Customers were dropping off at checkout. International buyers couldn’t tell if they were buying a real hand-forged blade or a mass-produced imitation. Trust was the missing ingredient.
What I Built
I designed and developed a full e-commerce website that told the story behind each blade — the forge, the craftsmen, the materials, the process. Every product page was written to educate as much as it was written to sell.
The site was built on WordPress with WooCommerce, with a focus on three things: speed, trust signals, and mobile experience. For international buyers, direct bank transfer was integrated as a payment option — removing the friction of third-party processors and making it easier for customers worldwide to complete a purchase with confidence. A WhatsApp chat widget was also added so customers could ask questions in real time, get sizing advice, or customise an order — turning what was once a cold transaction into a conversation.
International shipping, secure payment, and product authenticity were all made front and centre — not buried in fine print.
The Result
A digital storefront that finally matched the craftsmanship of the product. Bounce rates dropped, time-on-site increased, and customers from Australia, the US, and the UK began completing purchases with confidence.
Some things are worth preserving. This project was about making sure a centuries-old craft could find its place in the modern world.
